Understanding the Affordable Care Act (ACA): What You Need to Know

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), sometimes known as "Obamacare," is a health care reform law that was passed in 2010. Its main goal is to make health insurance more affordable and accessible for individuals and families across the United States. 1. Affordable Health Coverage:
The ACA created a Health Insurance Marketplace where individuals and families can shop for coverage. Based on your income and household size, you may qualify for subsidies (also called premium tax credits) that lower your monthly insurance premiums. 2. Coverage for Pre-Existing Conditions:
Insurance companies can no longer deny you coverage or charge you more because of a pre-existing health condition like diabetes, asthma, or cancer.

All ACA plans must cover ten essential health benefits, including:

4. No Lifetime or Annual Limits:

5. Coverage for Young Adults:
Children can stay on their parent’s health insurance plan until age 26, even if they’re not in school or living at home.

You qualify to enroll in an ACA health plan if:

• You are a U.S. citizen or lawfully present in the U.S.
   
• You don’t have access to affordable job-based coverage
   
• You are not enrolled in Medicare or Medicaid
   

Even if you didn’t qualify for help before, recent changes under the American Rescue Plan and Inflation Reduction Act may mean more people qualify for help than ever before.

• Open Enrollment Period: Usually runs from November 1 to January 15 each year.
   
• Special Enrollment Period: If you’ve experienced a life event like losing job-based insurance, getting married, or having a baby, you may be able to enroll outside of the regular window.
